In the orchestra of business, we all need a conductor

As a leader at Liberty Blume, I know very well that the world of business services is a busy, complicated place. With so many moving parts, teams, deliverables and deadlines, it can quickly feel like a lot of noise. But when all those parts work together, something powerful happens: that noise becomes music.

Of course, that can only happen with a conductor – someone who sets the pace, keeps things aligned, and helps everyone stay in sync.

At Liberty Blume, operations is our home turf. It’s what we do best. We specialise in providing world-class tech-enabled business services, designed and delivered by our own team of experts – backed by Liberty Global’s legacy of expertise.

In today’s complex business landscape, companies without a sense of coordination often fall behind. Modern leaders have a lot to grapple with, from understanding what’s happening inside the business to what’s changing outside of it.

To deliver exceptional business services at scale, at Liberty Blume we focus on making sure teams are coordinated, working from the same playbook, and are moving toward shared goals. That’s how we help our customers unlock their full potential and fuel their next phase of growth.

For me, this is where having great people in the right roles really matters. Leaders like Dr. David Feavearyear, our Procurement lead, and Max Handforth, our Business Solutions lead – both future-focused and tapped into the worlds of automation and innovation – alongside Aniqa Sandhu, who brings a wealth of international Financial Solutions expertise having built FinTech’s for major telecom groups across the globe, are perfect examples of this. The work they do helps us to deliver expert-driven services that remove friction and unlock value for our clients.

At the heart of my orchestra analogy is the customer. They’re the sheet music guiding everything we do. A survey we conducted earlier this year found that 9 in 10 senior leaders believe value is trapped in operational processes, with 29% pointing to outdated processes as the root cause. That’s what we’re here to help solve.

As Liberty Blume evolves, I’ve been reflecting on some of the changes I’ve seen during my career. Compared to my early days working at EMI Records and Mars, the current landscape is considerably different – due in no small part to the rapid pace of technological innovation – but the principles of good business and leadership remain true.

The best customer outcomes don’t happen by chance. They are the result of well-optimised operations, expertise and leadership that brings it all together.

Being a good conductor doesn’t mean controlling every note. It means creating the right environment for people, tools, and processes to work together smoothly. It’s about knowing when to step in, when to step back, and how to help every part of the organisation play its role at the right time.
